Topic 1: The way towards sustainable and resilient food systems
Our cooperation interest is in the suggested R&I aspects of
"Developing scenario-based approaches strengthening risk assessment and adaptability by food actors in relation to food safety and security shocks.",
"Addressing the polarisation and fragmentation in food systems and finding innovative ways to work together towards sustainable and resilient food systems also considering the question of equity" and
"Learnings from large and small systems, corresponding interactions and practices looking at problems and solutions in particular contexts".
Our contribution could be to do research on consumer perceptions and reactions to different scenarios, to various forms of innovative food systems. In order come up with promising solutions, consumer research in case study contexts will render important insights.
Our team has extensive expertise in applying qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. This includes testing consumer perception of different scenarios, by using qualitative research (in-depth interviews, focus groups, Q-methodology) and quantitive research on the acceptance of different bioeconomic scenarios, as well as on various aspects of sustainable food consumption (pasture-raised milk, biodiversity, animal welfare, local food, organic food), by using choice experiments, contingent valuation and the information display matrix.
The section Agricultural and Food Marketing at the University of Kassel is doing research is on the expectations of citizens and consumers towards sustainable agriculture, food industry and their products. An important part of this research is the analysis of the changing social challenges and expectations as well as the possible ways for the transition to sustainable food systems. Consumer responses to and acceptance of innovative products and processes are an essential element of each transformation process. Finally we explore on suitable communication strategies for increasing sustainable food consumption.
