Topic 2: New foods – Fostering innovations in food design, processing and supply via demand-and-supply reorientation
We are open to joining an existing consortium as a fully eligible Belgian partner under the Widening Option for proposals selected for full-proposal submission and can contribute in areas such as:
Integration and calibration of inline sensors to monitor biomass, pigment levels, and other adjustable parameters in (photo)bioreactor systems for high quality biomass used in e.g. foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals.
Development and validation of AI models for closed-loop control of nutrient input and cultivation conditions.
Delivery of real-time data acquisition solutions and benchmarking tools to support process optimization.
Support for scale-up from laboratory setups to pilot-scale microorganism/microalgae production systems.
Contribution to food technology efforts, particularly in formulating novel food products with specific nutritional or functional profiles.
Design and development of lab-scale photobioreactors tailored to unique research and development needs.
Involvement in stakeholder engagement around quality standards, CO2 equivalents, regulatory compliance, and consumer-oriented performance metrics based on objective data.
Astrofood is a biotech start-up based in Belgium and incubated by the European Space Agency. Our core focus is on AI-driven photobioreactor systems for precision cultivation of fresh Spirulina and other microalgae/microorganisms. Our systems integrate inline sensors with real-time AI control loops to optimize nutritional content, automate operations, and result in unparalleled quality & consistency. This allows for innovative foodstuffs with very high acceptance with consumers. Our technology stems from developments aimed at space food systems and has now been adapted for Earth-based food microalgae foodstuffs applications. We are currently looking to join an existing consortium as a fully eligible Belgian partner under the Widening Option for proposals selected for full-proposal submission.
