Topic 2: Towards diverse, sustainable and circular food processing systems
We are seeking to join a project aimed at making fisheries and seafood production more sustainable, with a particular focus on innovations in the cold chain and processing systems.
Our expertise includes energy-efficient refrigeration technologies, natural refrigerants, advanced cold storage solutions, and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across processing and transport stages. We can contribute through technical know-how, pilot-scale testing of innovative solutions, and system-level sustainability assessments to support practical, scalable approaches for circular and climate-friendly seafood value chains.
SINTEF Ocean is part of SINTEF, one of Europe’s largest independent research organisations, dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for industry and society. SINTEF Ocean focuses on research and innovation for the marine and maritime sectors, supporting the transition to environmentally responsible and resource-efficient ocean industries.
Our work spans the entire seafood value chain, from harvest to processing and distribution, with expertise in:
Energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies for fisheries and aquaculture.
Cold chain optimization, refrigeration systems, and thermal energy storage.
Process innovation and circular resource use, including integration of renewable energy and natural refrigerants.
System-level sustainability analysis, addressing environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
By combining applied research, advanced modelling, and pilot-scale testing, SINTEF Ocean helps industry partners develop practical, scalable solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize food waste, and improve resilience in seafood processing systems.
