Ecotarian is looking to join a transnational consortium as a technology and sustainability assessment partner within Topic 3: Importance of trust and transparency.
We offer a digital methodology for calculating, comparing and communicating the sustainability impact of food products, recipes and complete menus. Our approach combines life cycle assessment principles with a broader set of environmental indicators, enabling consortium partners to translate complex food sustainability data into clear, evidence-based and actionable information.
Within a project consortium, Ecotarian can contribute to:
Life cycle and environmental impact assessments of ingredients, food products, recipes and menus;
The development and validation of transparent sustainability metrics and scoring frameworks;
Comparative scenario analyses, such as ingredient substitution, recipe reformulation, alternative sourcing and menu optimisation;
The design and testing of clear sustainability labels for physical and digital food environments;
Consumer-facing communication through labels, dashboards, QR codes and digital applications;
The design of nudging interventions aimed at encouraging more sustainable food choices;
Real-life pilot testing in foodservice, catering, institutional kitchens, retail or other food environments;
Monitoring and evaluating changes in purchasing behaviour, meal selection and environmental impact;
Providing measurable data for project impact assessment, reporting and dissemination.
Our main added value is the connection between robust sustainability calculations and their practical application. We do not only calculate environmental impact, but also translate the results into understandable information that can support consumers, food professionals and policymakers in their decisions.
We are particularly interested in collaborating with universities, behavioural scientists, consumer researchers, foodservice organisations, retailers, food producers, public authorities and technology providers. Together, we aim to test how evidence-based sustainability information, integrated labelling and nudging can improve transparency, strengthen consumer trust and generate measurable changes in food choices across different European contexts.
Ecotarian is a Belgian food sustainability technology company that helps organisations measure, improve and communicate the environmental impact of food.
Our digital solution assesses ingredients, food products, recipes and menus using life cycle assessment principles and multiple sustainability indicators. The results can be translated into accessible sustainability scores and labels, allowing foodservice organisations, institutional kitchens, caterers, producers and other food system actors to understand and reduce their environmental impact.
Ecotarian combines environmental data analysis with practical decision-support tools. Users can compare recipes, evaluate alternative ingredients, identify sustainability hotspots and model improvement scenarios. The results can subsequently be communicated to consumers through clear labels, digital interfaces and nudging interventions.
Our role within a research and innovation consortium can include sustainability methodology, data processing, environmental impact calculations, labelling, scenario modelling, pilot implementation and impact monitoring. We are interested in testing and further developing our solution together with scientific, behavioural, industrial and public-sector partners in different European food environments.
