Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (TM) is the largest university of applied sciences in Flanders, Belgium. By engaging in practice-oriented scientific research, TM fosters innovation in companies, organizations, and society at large. Through its nine Centres of Expertise, over 250 researchers apply their knowledge, skills, and experience to develop scientifically grounded, innovative products and services.
One of these centres is the Centre of Expertise Sustainable Biomass and Chemistry (RADIUS), which integrates diverse areas of expertise to advance sustainability. RADIUS focuses particularly on the cultivation, processing, and application of alternative biomass. Its key areas of research include: (1) Optimizing insect production and exploring the potential of insects as a sustainable biomass source for a variety of applications. (2) Cultivating microalgae and assessing their viability as an alternative, sustainable source of biomass for various uses. (3) Downstream processing of alternative biomass to create sustainable solutions for different applications.
The centre emphasizes practical applications, conducting experiments at both laboratory and pilot scales. Drawing on extensive expertise, it provides guidance and support, bridging the gap between scientific research and practical implementation.
TM serves as a catalyst for regional development and boasts a strong track record in EU-funded projects. The university is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels and has been recognized with the UN SDG Pioneer certificate. Additionally, TM is a member of the KU Leuven Association and coordinates the HEROES European University Alliance.
